WorldWide PhotoWalk – Gig Harbor, WA edition

I participated in the 2nd annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk. A photowalk is basically a social gathering where a group gets together, walks around a city, and then meets to compare photos and make new friends. In 2008 I participated in the Portland, OR walk. This year it was Gig Harbor, WA. Gig Harbor is a very beautiful place.
Our walk leader, Marvin Nauman (see www.highsierraproductions.com), arranged for us to visit two sites where commercial fishing equipment and fisherman were present. At the second site the fisherman were preparing their nets for immediate departure. This was an interesting subject matter that I had not shot before. In my opinion, we were there about two hours too early as the light was very harsh. Maybe I’ll get a chance to visit again some other time.
I think I may have been skunked on getting a great photo, but I did get a few that are posted below. I shot these images with a Nikon D90 and while my lens went to 18mm (the fabulous though crazily inexpensive 18-105mm kit lens that comes with the D90), this was not wide enough. I wish I had brought my D700 and 17-35mm lens as it would have done the trick.
The highlight of the walk for me was making new friends. One in particular, Mike Hagen, is a well-known photographer and the head of Nikonians Academy. I’ve actually participated in two Nikonians Academy events but had not met Mike before. His work can be seen at www.outthereimages.com I think I am going to sign up for one of his classes.
I encourage all who read this to mark your calendar for late next spring to see if the 3rd annual photowalk is happening in your area. I am not sure where I will walk next year, but I am sure I will walk and I will have fun!
Blessings!
